Olanzapine is an atypical antipsychotic drug that has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of psychotic disorders. It inhibits neurotransmitter pathways known to be involved in nausea and vomiting serotonergic, dopaminergic, alpha-1 adrenergic, histaminic, and muscarinic receptors. In recent trials, the addition of oral olanzapine to standard therapy can reduce the frequency of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, and also improves the quality of life of patients receiving highly or moderately emetogenic chemotherapy. Olanzapine is inexpensive, and has a strong antiemetic effect. |
