One of the prerequisites to inserting the laryngeal mask airway (LMA) successfully is the depression of upper airway reflexes. Correctly positioning of LMA is difficult or even impossible if adverse responses such as gagging and coughing occur during the insertion. Numerous drugs which suppress laryngeal reflexes, such as propofol, thiopental, fentanyl, midazolam or lidocaine have been advocated in facilitating the insertion of this device. Use of propofol for the induction of anesthesia has already been recommended in the LMA manual. However, the sole use of propofol does not always guarantee a successful insertion of the LMA. |
