Opioids are still the therapeutic mainstay in clinical pain management. They are recommended by WHO as the 'gold standard' in the treatment of terminal cancer pain, even for long-term administration; besides effectively decreasing the pain, they improve patients' life quality as well. Long-term opioid administration may escort drug tolerance and dependency. In addition, since addiction and abuse of opioids are the major fears and concerns of health providers, therefore they are only confined in the treatment of cancer pain. There are a group of patients suffering from severe pain which limits their function of life; the reduction of such a painful discomfort so as to improve their living function and life quality is an important issue as well as a basic humanitarian right. |
