Empirically based on clinical observations, Crile first proposed the concept of preemptive analgesia about a decade ago. This proposition of preemptive analgesia has now been widely accepted as the definition of an antinociceptive treatment that prevents the establishment of altered processing of afferent input, which amplifies postoperative pain. Unlike clinical studies which have raised bitter controversy, experimental studies on pre-emptive analgesia are well convincing in many pharmacological aspects with different animal models. Here comes in this June issue of Acta Anaesthesiologica Sinica another piece of evidence, a new finding that deserves a second thought with regard to ketamine-induced preemptive analgesia. |
