The aim of this project was to improve the knowledge of tobacco and smoking behavior change in psychiatric patients. The project recruited 62 patients in a tobacco cessation program from April 1, 2010 to July 15, 2010 at a psychiatric hospital. The tobacco cessation program included tobacco cessation education courses, a family manual, smoking diary, relaxation and exercise, group sharing , and reinforcement strategies. Outcome measurements were collected by questionnaire and included tobacco knowledge and nicotine dependency score as well as, carbon monoxide level, which were collected before, every month, and after the intervention. We found 1.he pre-intervention tobacco knowledge score of 70% increased to 94% post- intervention ; 2.the pre-intervention carbon monoxide level of 14.2ppm first was decreased to 9.2ppm ; and 3.nicotine dependency decreased from 7.5 to 5.0, statistically significant change. (p<0.01) The results demonstrate that tobacco cessation program improved patients’ tobacco knowledge and smoking behavior . This project may be used as a reference for clinical tobacco cessation programs and hospitals. |
