Background: In the past three decades, an increasing proportion of women have delayed childbearing for educational, social, and economic reasons. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the severe pain during childbirth and parturient's age. Methods: A cross-sectional survey study used computerized hospital datasets of inpatients with vaginal delivery in Taichung Veterans General Hospital (VGHTC) from 1st November 2012 to 30 November 2012. The study analyzed the difference between the characteristics of parturients and severe pain perception with t-test and Chi-Square test. Results: Compared with advanced maternal age women, the incidence of reporting severe labor pain was significantly higher in the group of less than 35 years old (37.1% versus 15.4%, P<0.041). Conclusion: Compared with advanced maternal age parturients, young parturients were more likely to experience severe pain during vaginal delivery. Differences parturients make decision with medical care are vary by their preferences. More individually effective interventions should be designed to deal with the different painful experiences among parturients. |
