Violentoffensesoftencauseveryseriousproblemsanddangerstosociety.Thistypeofbehaviorisoftenascribedtoproblemswiththeprocessesinvolvedininhibitorycontrol.Inthisstudy,aTaylorAggressionTaskwasusedtoexaminetheeffectsofaggressivesituationsandemotionsoninhibitorycontrolinadolescentswhoshowreactiveaggression.Theexperimentwasdesignedwithamanipulationoftheproportionofwinandlosesandthedegreeofpunishmentinordertotrytoproduceasocialcontextinthelaboratory.TheReactiveProactiveAggressionQuestionnaire(RPAQ)andBarrattImpulsivenessScale(BIS)wereusedtomeasurethesubjects’aggressiontypesandtheirdegreeofimpulsivebehavior.Theparticipantsincludedimpulsiveviolentadolescentoffenders(experimentalgroup),non-violentadolescentoffenders(controlgroup1)andnormaladolescents(controlgroup2).TheRPAQandBISshowedthatthescoresoftheexperimentalgroupweresignificantlyhigherthanthoseofcontrolgroups.ThebehavioraldatafromtheTaylorAggressionTaskshowedthattheexperimentalgroupgavemorepunishmentthandidcontrolgroups1and2.Thepunishmentscoreforthefirsttrial,whichinvolvednoprovocation,washigherfortheexperimentalgroupthanforthecontrols.Analyzingtheproportionofpunishmentscores,thepercentageofhighpunishmentscores(score5-8)intheexperimentalgroupwaslargerthaninthetwocontrolgroupswhilethereversewastrueforthelowpunishmentscores.Theviolentadolescentsmayhaveadeficitinsolvingcognitiveandemotionalconflictandinevaluatingsocialcontextforthemodificationofinhibitorycontrol. |
