This system was established in 2003 during the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) epidemic. Previously, populous institutions were required to give a daily report on the number of cases with temperature over 38°C. As the SARS epidemic ended in July 2003, the surveillance definitions were modified to continue monitoring for outbreaks of respiratory and intestinal infectious diseases in populous institutions. The system was converted to the 'Communicable Diseases Surveillance for Populous Institutions' reporting system on September 1, 2004. |
