Origins, Sites, Systems: Structural Writings of Singapore Chinese Literary History
Writing the history of Singapore Chinese literature necessitates an effort of examining it as a subject being shaped by a variety of vertical and horizontal forces as its internal structure has been constantly reconfigured in response to external influences. The timeline has stretched in such a way that the literature connects with Malaysian Chinese literature and Nanyang literature and can even be traceable to literary traditions in China. When it comes to dissemination and reception of Chinese culture, it has multiple linkages with Malaysian Chinese, China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, making it crucial to study networks between these literary sites. Within Singapore's national framework where the Chinese language group has been marginalized, it is imperative to examine how the literature reacts to national policies and multiculturalism. Adopting the vantage points of origin, site, and system, this article examines how the Singapore Chinese literature has evolved from a unilateralism of China genesis to subjectivity in a polysystem and with cultural crossing. It attempt to reveal its history has twisting timelines and sophisticated linkages.
