We compared dexamethasone gel (0.125 %) with normal saline gel as cuff lubricant for laryngeal mask airway in 80 patients receiving general anesthesia with standardized anesthetic and insertion technique. All patients received spontaneous intermittent mandatory ventilation with intraoperative cuff pressure control. Incidence of postoperative sore throat was not lowered significantly in patients using dexamethasone gel than those with normal saline gel (18.33 % vs. 23.33 % I 18.33 % vs. 26.67 %; groups with/without succinylcholine, P> 0.05). Although this study failed to stand for the beneficial effect of dexamethasone gel (0.125 %) as laryngeal mask airway (LMA) lubricant, use of dexamethasone gel with higher concentration or other hydrocortisone agents with higher topical potency to prevent postoperative sore throat are still worthy to investigate in the future. |
