Radiology imaging and treatment are medical routine procedures frequently and widely used in Taiwan. The utilization of computer tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and other high-tech equipment has increased year by year. However, with the rapid development of medical technology, medical radiologic technology is becoming more sophisticated, and in order to keep pace with the specialization of medical practice, radiation technologist have to possess more advanced and specialized knowledge, experience and technique to assure the quality of care. With regard to practical operation and professional development, it is an important trend for further sub-specialization in medical practice, hence for radiation technologists have to be equipped with more professional and higher quality technique.
As for the system of education and training, the present “mentoring system” and “PGY program” are usually capable of conduction clinical techniques to trainees with outstanding results. However, the unorganized teaching given by “mentors” and the lack of universal implementation of the PGY program resulted in a system under which radiologic technologist trained not assumed of complete and reliable profession all quality. We hereby proposed a Specialist Radiation Technologist (SRT) system be set up. (1) The Taiwan Association of Medical Radiation Technologist (TAMRT) advocates to revise the Medical Radiation Technologists Act, thus establishing the legal basis for SRT. (2) The TAMRT should invite experts and scholars to discuss about the sub-division of specialty and method of certification regarding SRT. (3) After practicing a certain time in general diagnostic radiography, radiation technologists will be eligible to apply for specialist training, and can currently PGY system as specialist training content. (4) In the future, advanced and specialized radiologic imaging or therapeutic procedures, such as cardiac catheterization, nuclear medicine, MRI or radiation oncology, should only be conducted by SRTs. |
