Unicode Seminar

Librarians and information specialists met at the NCL on June 3 for a seminar on the Internet Unicode system. The two morning sessions were chaired by Mr. Tien-chu Kao (高天助), deputy director of the Information Technology Promotion Division at the Institute for Information Industry (III) and Mr. Shang-sheng Jeng (鄭祥勝) an III advisor. Topics covered during the meeting included: the development of character codes and coding standards; internal codes and transfer codes; Chinese character related to international/national standards and industry specifications; CNS 11643 Chinese standard exchange codes (introduction and application examples); and Unicode issues pertaining to ISO 10646. The coding principles, status, application, and impact of the Unicode system were also discussed.
