Topics on the extension department of the farmers’ association didnot receive much attention in the literature. Taking the farming extensionpersonnel as the research population, this study attempts to examine theextension personnel’s work performance and its major determinants, witha special focus on peer interaction at the workplace. Depart from pastliterature associating one-way interaction with work performance; thisstudy considers a two-way interaction involving both active and passivepeer interaction in the workplace. To this end, a trivariate probit model isspecified and applied to the survey data of farming extension personnelin Taiwan’s farmers’ association. The empirical results suggest thatalthough peer helping is a key factor in influencing agricultural extensionpersonnel’s work performance, its impact depends on whether there arepeers with similar expertise. It is found that the presence of professionalpeers does improve individual’s performance; however, due to possiblecrowding-out effect of peer interaction, peer interaction might lower theextension personnel’s award winning probability in the absence ofprofessional peers. |
