This paper is composed of 6 sections. Section 1 provides an overview of the demography and geographical distribution of languages in Qiangic, a newly discovered Tibeto-Burman branch, plus my personal views on the interrelations of the languages within this branch. Sections 2 summarizes the state of current research on Qiangic and the existing controversies. Sections 3 and 4 are devoted to the basic phonological, grammatical, lexical characteristics, and the cultural and historical backgrounds of the development of the Qiangic branch. Section 5 discusses the linguistic position of Qiangic in Tibeto-Burman branch. In the remainder of the paper, I propose suggestions concerning the identification and nomenclature of certain problematic Qiangic languages. |
