This paper investigates two correlative constructions, yuè … yuè… and zài … ye& …, in Mandarin Chinese. It is shown that they share many semantic and syntactic properties. Both of the constructions at issue are used to express a link between two variables, one independent and the other dependent. Besides, it is argued that both zài and the first yuè occur in the topic portion of a sentence, while ye& and the second yuè occur in the comment part of the sentence. Finally, yuè and zài have to coöccur with quantifiable predicate phrases, but ye& , with a wider scope of modification than yuè or zài, is not subject to the same constraint. |
