The purpose of this study was to explore the altered body image and coping behaviors of a hospitalized woman with facial burns. The data were collected by participant observation. Fourteen pieces of process recording were completed and the contents were analyzed inductively. The alterations of body image of this case were categoried into four domains: body structure, body function, body sensation and social function. She coped with the stress with help from team members, and adjusted herself to face her new life after discharge. The processes of her adaptation included denial, escape, resumption of physiological demands, withdrawal, and finally being able to call for help, to attend the treatment actively, and to reconstruct new body images. Eventually, she could even try to find the new value of her life and to face others after discharge. |
