The implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), developed by Drs. Michel Mirowski and Morton Mower in the late 1960s, has since been established as an efficient intervention to prevent sudden cardiac death. However, most patients express psychological distress after ICD implantation due to ICD induced lifestyle changes and concerns regarding the potential of receiving a defibrillating shock at any time. This article reviews literature articles on the treatment, indications, and psychological impact of implanted ICDs as well as on nursing care for ICD recipients. The goal is to promote quality of care for patients with implanted ICDs. |
