The argument structure of the Verb-Complement (VC) in contemporary Chinese is analyzed on two levels: (1) a description of the constraints on combinations of verbs and adjectives of which the VC is constructed; and (2) a focus on the argument structure of the VC construction, theta roles, and selectional restrictions related to the VC construction. It is worth noting that the argument structure of the VC construction is significantly different from that of its two components, the verb and the adjective. As a practical application of this work, the ambiguous pattern verb + adjective + noun, which could be parsed either as [verb [adjective noun]] or as [[verb adjective] noun], can be disambiguated. |
