Nursing staff leaving work on time has been a topic of conversation. Nursing work is often faced with staff shortage and prolonged hours, which then lead to physical and mental fatigue, decreasing job satisfaction, increasing turnover rate, and in turn raise concerns for nursing quality and patient safety. The project was launched in the pediatric intensive care unit on July 10, 2012, and ended on Febrauary 28, 2013. An in-depth investigation conducted by the project team revealed that "too much time spent during inventory and shift change", "excessive dayshift workload", "too much time spent receiving new patients", "medical equipment maintenance too time consuming" and etc. After situation analysis and literary review, the project team proposed the following solutions: revised regulations on shift change; revised job description; revised medical equipment management; revised job description on receiving new patient; and advocate inventory regulations. The rate of nursing staff leaving on time increased from 23.8% to 90.6% after the solutions were implemented, and the averaged delayed time reduced from 49 min. to 15 min. The project was effective in increasing the rate of nursing staff leaving work on time. We would like to advocate and implement the project in all nursing units of the medical institution in hope to benefit more clinical nursing staff. |
