More than 95% of cancers of the uterus are carcinomas. Uterine sarcomas, which account for 3-7%, are cancers that started from the muscle and supporting tissue of the uterus. Uterine sarcomas are associated with bad prognosis and approximately 50% of all patients develop metastases even if they are diagnosed at early stages. The high mortality level makes uterine sarcomas one of the most challenging tumors in oncology. This article is a general review of uterine sarcoma, with emphasis on targeted therapy, a newer type of cancer treatment. |
