Gordonia sputi is a rare but serious cause of infection in immunocompromised patients. Identification of Gordonia species can be time consuming, and these species may be dismissed as contaminating diptheroids or misidentified as other gram-positive bacilli, such as Rhodococcus or Nocardia species, when using traditional biochemical methods. Thus, it is important to consider infection by Gordonia sp. when blood culture pathogen identification is inconclusive and when the patient does not respond to empirical antimicrobial therapy. For accurate identification of G. sputi, matrix- assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry and 16S rRNA gene sequencing are suggested. |
