Sexual offenses are not only crimes but also serious violations of human rights. Most sexual assault victims suffer from rape trauma syndrome. This paper presents an example of the syndrome. A young adult female rape victim suffered physically from wrist pain, nightmare, insomnia, and gastrointestinal and genital dysfunction. She also had psychological problems, including anger, weeping, guilt, fear, silence and fear of being alone, as well as social problems, including loss of confidence, lack of security, sexual dysfunction, and difficulty in heterosexual relationships, etc. From May 1 to August 10, 2001, the author, through establishing a private and humane environment, encouraging abreaction, listening, reinforcing the self-confidence of the victim, and providing relevant medical information and welfare resources, successfully built up a trustful relationship with the victim, and assisted her in achieving recovery from the rape trauma syndrome. The present report is an account of the author's experience in helping this sexual assault victim through the syndrome. |
