This case report describes the experience of the nursing care of a patient undergoing surgery to make a living kidney donation. The Gordon 11-item Functional Health Pattern was used as an assessment tool to assess the client's health problems. Although having the confidence to donate a renal organ, the client had several emotional frustrations, including self-blame and guilt. After surgery, the patient's major problems were pain, anxiety, and knowledge deficit. In order to increase the understanding of the renal transplantation, alleviate the level of anxiety and pain suffered, we taught the patient and her family related knowledge, listened to and accompanied the patient, provided appropriate pain management, and encouraged family members to provide mental support. There was little literature discussing the care of living kidney donors. We hope this report can serve as a reference for planning the nursing care of living donors. |
