This Pulmonary Rehabilitation Manual was written for COPD patients by the author and a group of fully experienced nurses specializing in pulmonary rehabilitation. In addition to clinical experience, the author relied on relevant literature reviews and expert consultation. A number of health team members were consulted, including doctors in a chest department, a lecturer in respiratory care, an associate professor in a nursing department, and a physical therapy leader. After final reviews by the medical professionals, the manual was proofread by a senior clinical nursing specialist. In Taiwan, most patients wanting to ask for health-or disease- related information tend to go to the doctors. They are totally ignorant of the role nurses play in health teaching. Actually, in clinical settings, it is rather common to see teaching and learning going on between patients and nurses. On the one hand, it is important to popularize nurses' health teaching role; on the other hand, what to teach, how to teach and what outcomes to expect are matters to which we have to give thorough consideration. In a society in which the amount of information is increasing rapidly, nurses have to understand how to find information and how to apply information to enhance health behaviors of patients. |
