Li Qixian 李齊賢 (1288-1367) was a late Goryeo dynasty poet whose lifetime approximately spanned Kublai Khan' s conquest of the Southern Song to the Yuan dynasty emperor Shun's 元順帝flight to the north. The poems Li wrote during his travels in China are among the most striking works of ancient Korean poetry. This paper presents the result of on-site investigations into the poetry he wrote on his 1316 trip to Chengdu 成都, where he offered sacrifices to Mountain Emei 峨眉山at King Chungseon of Goryeo's 高麗忠宣王request, as recorded in his Yizhai Luangao 益齋亂藁. I first try to ascertain the date and purpose of his mission, calculate his itinerary in accordance with ancient trade routes, and establish the order of writing of his 42 travel poems. Secondly, I evaluate Li's descriptive accomplishments by comparing the poems with the landscapes about which they were written. |
