By continuous glucose monitoring system(CGMS), the effects of PPB-R-203(special resistant starch product) on the glycemic control of a diabetic patient will be discussed in this case report. Our subject is a 42-year-old male with the history of diabetes and hypertension. At present, this patient receives insulin injection for adjusting his blood glucose level. In this case, the patient took either PPB-R-203 or commercial starch product as meals and the glycemic variability of both conditions would be monitored by CGMS. By means of CGMS, the blood glucose level of the subject was monitored all day long. In this way, we were able to detect the blood glucose level consecutively and compare the effects between PPB-R-203 and commercial starch product. PPB-R-203 was made up of barley, wheat germ, oats, buckwheat, maize and unpolished rice. After grinding all these component to powder, the content of resistant starch was elevated through seven stages of heating and pressing processes. In the end, the processed powder was used to produce rice, noodles and crackers. This case report indicated that intake of PPB-R-203 could decrease the elevation of blood glucose level after meals. On the other hand, PPB-R-203 intake could also improve the hypoglycemia caused by insulin treatment. That is, PPB-R-203 could stabilize the level of blood glucose in the diabetic patient receiving insulin injection. In conclusion, the resistant starch products, such as PPB-R-203, could be added to the meals of diabetic patients for a better glycemic control. |
