Therefore, we should know that nutrient and defense are interrelated and interdependent on physiological function. Nutrient qi is derived from the five flavors provided by the earth. Defense qi is from nose qi. This means that qi from mouth nourishes 'nutrient' and qi from nose nourishes 'defense'. The function of nutrient-defense is controlled by the mind and the strength. Nutrient and defense are parallel and get along with qi-blood in vessels and channels. The major function of 'defense' is to do air exchanges and maintenance. It introduces oxygen to burn nutrients in body for oxidization in order to help the physiological function of nutrient qi. Through digestion and breath, the physiological basis of defense qi can be improved for protecting the body from sickness. Following the theory of 'nutrient qi moves within the vessels and defensive qi moves outside the vessels' in , nutrient qi and defense qi are moving synergistically in their own ways through vessels inside and outside. Defense qi protects the body surface and ward off external pathogens. Nutrient qi moves nourishes all the organs and tissues. The cooperation between both can not be separated. |
