Dementia, also referred to as major neurocognitive disorder in the Fifth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), is evidence of signifi cant decline in many cognitive domains and cognitive defi cits. Individuals with major neurocognitive disorder exhibit cognitive defi cits that interfere with independence. The new terms such as major and mild neurocognitive disorder, focus on a decline, rather than a defi cit, in function. Besides the cognitive impairment, the dementia patients may have behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), also known as neuropsychiatric symptoms, represent a heterogeneous group of non-cognitive symptoms and behaviors. BPSD constitutes a major component of the dementia syndrome irrespective of its subtype. |
