Antipsychotic polypharmacy (APP) is de- fined as the concomitant use of two or more anti- psychotic drugs in a patient for the treatment of a disorder. Under certain circumstances, antipsy- chotic co-treatment may be superior to antipsy- chotic monotherapy regarding all-cause discon- tinuation and general measures of efficacy . In the present issue of the Taiwanese Journal of Psychiatry, Wu et al. reported that 38.7% of patients hospitalized with a diagnosis of schizo- phrenia are prescribed with a combination of anti- psychotic drugs, and that the combination of a first-generation antipsychotic (FGA) drug and a second-generation antipsychotic (SGA) drug (25% of all prescribing patterns) is the most com- monly prescribed treatment. The clinical practice to prescribe antipsychotic drugs has been changed in recent years. |
