We are presenting a case of a female patient with a recurrent major depressive episode and pulmonary embolism, who received a repeated electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). The 70-year-old female patient suffered from the fi rst major depressive episode with psychotic and catatonic features at the age of 63 years. The episode was controlled adequately using a course of six-session ECT. She had the second major depressive episode when she was 68 years old. She received another course of nine-session ECT to get her second major depressive episode remitted. She had received drug maintenance treatment until the third major depressive episode at the age of 70 years. The symptoms and signs of the third major depressive episode included dysphoria, intense anxiety, insomnia, delusions, hallucinations, intermittent agitations, and refusal to eat at admission to the hospital. |
