Following the steps of Suenari and Kasahara, this paper traces the trends of anthropological studies in Japan of indigenous peoples of Taiwan between 2004-2014. The fieldwork was conducted in Japan by visiting related museums and universities, attending research activities and communicationg with researchers. According to the literature review, there are two major research trends: (1) Based on the achievements of past studies, and continuing to pursue related issues, the full professor level researchers include Katsuhiko Yamaji, Jun Shimizu, Atsushi Nobayashi, Sunao Takoshima, Kae Kitamura and Yoshimi Yamamoto. (2) Concerning the current issues and using theoretical implications, the assistant and assoicate professor level researchers are as follows: Naoki Ishigaki, Maoko Miyaoka, Taira Nakamura, Eiko Hara, Tadasu Matsuoka and Hitoshi Yamada. In order to conquer the language barrier to increase the opportunities of communication between Japan and Taiwan, we need to do a lot of work on translations, publications and conferences in multiple languages. After accumulating research findings, Taiwanese and Japanese researchers can learn from each other and cooperate to create new directions on indigenous studies of Taiwan. |
