蔡美兒的育兒自述--《虎媽的戰歌》（Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother）一書中，蔡美兒說：「中國的家長是怎麼把子女教養得那麼成功的…我倒是可以告訴你，因為我是過來人，以下是一些我絕對不准兩個女兒做的事情：去朋友家過夜、參加朋友聚會、看電視或玩電腦遊戲、任何一科成績低於A、沒有每一科都拿第一（除了體育和戲劇）、不彈鋼琴或不拉小提琴。」 這些「絕對不准」，「驚嚇」到美國也包括台灣的父母，她為什麼要這樣做？能完全做到嗎？從她的第二個孩子露露愈來愈激烈的反抗中，蔡美兒也不得不做修正。這些過程又帶給父母哪些「警醒」呢？

A lot of people wonder how Chinese parents are able to educate such so-called successful kids. In Amy Chua's book "Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother", She confidently told the readers through her experiences, "There are some things that my daughters were never allowed to do: attending a sleep over, having a play date, being in a school play, watching TV or playing computer games, getting any grand less than an A, not playing the piano or violin etc. Amy Chua emphasized that Chinese mothers seem to have high expectation of children to perform academic excellence, musical mastery and professional success. She dubbed herself "Tiger Mother". Her first daughter, Sophia, could follow all her demands, but Louisa, the second daughter, could not obey her dominance. The latter has been always provoking a clash of opinions. In this case, the parents should try to understand what their children really want instead of compelling them to attain parent's goals.
