To address Mieke Bal's misconception of the multilayered levels of you, this paper argues that this pronoun is a fluid sign (more than a deictic entity) and attempts to adumbrate its implications in three clear-cut spheres: grammatical, discursive, and narrative. The aim is two-fold: to sum up in one place how you is conceived in these different spheres and to inaugurate an architectonics of you in terms of its once disparate and integral signifying mechanisms. Regarding the epistemic significance and relevance to human subjectivity implied by you, this paper finds that its trajectory of signification runs in the modes of representation, extension, and/or usurpation. |
