Patients with infectious diseases are confronted not only with the physiological and psychological stressors but also with the stigmatization of diseases. When being admitted and confined to a negative pressure isolation ward, patients are likely to experience anxiety and restlessness, which might adversely affect the treatment outcomes. Several studies have shown positive effects of choosing the right colors for decorating wards or clinics on the management of patients' emotions and stress (Lai, 2003; Ke, 2014). Therefore, we boldly applied the concept of color painting to a negative pressure isolation ward. Prior to the project initiation, we discovered the patients' favorite colors by using a questionnaire, and then we color painted the ward also based on suggestions from the literature. Additionally, we developed the "Satisfaction Questionnaire on Color Painted Negative Pressure Isolation Ward" to investigate the patient satisfaction. The results showed that 80% of patients and their family felt relaxed and reassured psychologically, that 92% reported that they would want to stay in a color painted ward if it would be optional, and that overall, 95% of patients were satisfied with the color painted isolation ward. In addition to pediatric wards, color painting is expected to be applied to more clinical units and settings, thereby facilitating the reversal of the stereotype of hospitals being cold and distant and the co-creation of a warm, friendly medical environment. |
