Six schools, including 2-year and 5-year junior colleges, 2-year institute of technology, and university have education training programs in medical radiation technology in taiwan from junior college to graduate school there are 500 graduates in radiation technology every year. After passing Level 3 of the Senior Examination, Examinations for Professionals and Technologists, or the qualification screening of the Minister of Examination, they can obtain certificates from the Atomic Energy Council and start their professional careers. According to statistics from the Atomic Energy Council, there were 422 medical radiology technicians and 2,722 medical radiology technologists as of March 1998 88.6% in diagnostic radiology, 6.9% in therapeutic radiology, and 4.5% in nuclear medicine. That is only 1.46 radiology technicians per ten thousand people. Compared with other developed countries, we are far from modern countries, yet we are very dependent on radiation technology in our delivery of medical care. We suggest that the government should establish a formal, on the job training program in order to promote the quality of medical radiology technique in Taiwan. How to increase the number of radiology technicians should also be carefully planned. Because of the important role of radiation technology in modern medicine, the government should act on this matter as soon as possible. |
