In 1966, NEC developed a computer system centering around receipts (detailed bills or medical fees) for a hospital attached to Sapporo Medical College. This was the first hospital information system in Japan. Although, at that time, batch processing was used, it was not long before on-line systems utilizing terminal devices occupied the mainstream. Cashier counter processing of patients accounts was next added to the work to be performed by computers. Thus, on-line systems utilizing general purpose computers mainly engaged in hospital management became widespread. Later, in the 1970s, the clinical laboratory system, drug management system, meal management system and the business management system were successively computerized. At present, numerous kinds of work are processed by computer. This work can be roughly classified into hospital management, clinic related work, and research and education as shown in Fig. 1. In addition, with respect to regional medical information systems, emergency medical information system and medical examination system computerization has been idealized. This paper introduces various aspects of the hospital information systems developed by NEC. |
