醫療是一門歷史悠久而且尚在成長的行業。生、老、病、死是人生必經的過程，在這過程中，人幾乎脫離不了醫療的範疇，而隨著社會的演變，時至今日，人對醫療的要求已遠非昔比。這些日益增多的要求，部份因醫學的進步而多能獲得滿足，然而在目前這種生活環境大為改善的社會，人對醫療的要求已不止於生理的醫治；一位病人躺在醫院的病床，除了希望病能痊癒外，還希望在住院的期間內過得很滿意，例如：醫院四周環境要優美，病房整潔美觀，醫護人員親切的和藹，飲食色香味俱全。總之，病人除了生理上的需求，他在安全、愛心、自尊等需求也希望得到滿足，這些更上一層的需求往往不是醫師所能單獨提供，它需要有組織的一群人才能合力提供。

Coordination of personnel to deliver better medical care services is one of the functions of another profession, the hospital manager. The doctors may not be skilled in hospitel administration although they are skilled in clinical techniques. According to socio-economic conditions, to educate a professional hospital manager is cheaper than to convert a doctor into a manager. Unfortunatoly, the latter rather than the former was adopted by most hospitals in Taiwan. It's time for the health care industry in Taiwan to have management by professional-personnel so as to decrease the cost of the hospitals' operation and improve the quality of medical care services.
