Chen Qing-Zhi was a famous general in Xiao Liang dynasty. He was the only general in the dynasty who had occupied the capital of North Wei, Luoyang, and had forced its emperor to flee from his palace. Chen had an ordinary background. He was neither the descendant of soldier nor noble family. Moreover, he was even overlooked by his emperor during his twenty-some years of military career, and did not deploy his own troops until he was forty-two years old. Previous research on Chen mainly centered on the siege of Luoyang. Few have discussed his other military experiences. This paper, therefore, presents a comprehensive description of Chen Qing-Zhi, including his battle experiences, military strategies and tactics. In addition, the paper will also discuss aspects in relation to his personality, academic and administrative abilities to present a better outlook of this well-known general. |
