Focusing on Dev Virahsawmy, the popular Mauritian dramatist who has produced radical adaptations and reinterpretations of Shakespeare’s plays, Françoise Lionnet argues in this essay that his Toufann is best understood not just in relation to the Shakespearean original (The Tempest), its explicit context, but rather as a transcolonial critique of power that echoes the work of several sub-Saharan African authors, such as Chinua Achebe or Sony Labou Tansi. In this way, this article theorizes the minor-to-minor transcolonial relationship as the locus of meaning, rather than the problematic transportation of the play back to the metropole |
