再現印度女性：狄帕．梅塔的《火》、《地》、《水》三部曲

Representing Indian Women: Deepa Mehta’s Fire, Earth, Water

印度裔加拿大導演狄帕‧梅塔（Deepa Mehta）是當前印度離散族群中極為傑出耀眼的一位女導演。梅塔的成名之作是由她自編自導的《火》（Fire, 1996）、《地》（Earth, 1998）、《水》（Water, 2005）「元素三部曲」（elements trilogy）。然而梅塔以三部曲再現印度女性的計畫，也飽受印度裔文化與電影學者的批判詬病，特別是質疑梅塔以女性主義為名，為了西方的觀影者而對於印度主題作了異國化的處理。本文基本的論點認為從《火》的1990年代新德里（New Delhi）、《地》的1947年面臨國土分裂的印度╱巴基斯坦邊城拉霍爾（Lahore）、到《水》中1928年恆河畔承載著兩千年歷史的聖城瓦拉納西（Varanasi），梅塔的三部曲以印度次大陸不同的地理背景，從女性身體意識的覺醒與自我實踐的追求、國族論述中的女性身體、到寡婦的生存權力等議題審視二十世紀的印度女性，更由此推衍到千百年以來印度女性地位形成的宗教與社會背景，是一個願景相當宏大的影像計畫。而三部曲採取時間倒敘的方式，則是更加深了對於印度女性問題逐漸追本溯源的意涵。本文就梅塔三部曲所引發的離散族群所面臨的再現政治問題──特別是限制與困境──作一探討，並進一步閱讀三部電影文本如何再現印度女性的生命經驗。

This paper explores the politics of representation in the “elements trilogy”—Fire, Earth, and Water—directed by Indian Canadian filmmaker Deepa Mehta. It argues that through the creation of the trilogy, Mehta, as a diasporic artist, has chosen a position that is both an insider and an outsider to the Indian context so that she can examine the lived experiences of three generations of Indian women in terms of sexuality, nationalism, and religious and social practices. The first part of the paper discusses the limits and problematics of representing India for an NRI like Mehta; the second part is a reading of the representation of women and gender politics in the three films.
