In order to improve the patient safety and pharmacy logistics management, Department of Health considers the EAN-128 to be completely adapted to individualuse unit of prescription drugs. The purpose of this study is to gather the policy comment from both sides of pharmaceuticals and hospitals. So far, about 80% of the pharmaceuticals have already put EAN-128 in use but less than 10% of the hospitals have done this, which concluded from the individual hospital interviews and returned surveys made by the pharmaceuticals and the hospitals. Moreover, both of the pharmaceuticals and the hospitals suggest that “bar code” needs to be unified. The hospitals tend to use EAN-128 as the policy; however, most of the pharmaceuticals prefer the EAN-13, which based on the adoption costs and technology. As a conclusion, the government should focus on both of the pharmaceuticals and the hospitals to put barcode system in use, and provide the necessary technology training and budget in order to complete the EAN-128 adoption on individual-use unit of prescription drugs. |
