As the trend of e-Hospital, the bureau of National Health Insurance (NHI) starts to provide the IC Card to replace the card in paper. With this new card, the public have a more convenient and safe certification for receiving the healthcare. For integrating with the existing Hospital Information System (HIS), the NHI provides many versions of control program (or called device drivers) such that the computers run on different platforms (such as Dos, Windows and Unix) in different operating modes (such as single machine and client-server) can easily access the IC-carder reader. However, the NHI did not provide the suitable control program to access the card reader for the web-based HIS since the web-based system is inherently forbidden to access the peripheral devices. Consequently, the Web-Based HIS can t read data from the National Health Insurance IC Card. In this paper, we propose a method to overcome the above problem. The method utilizes the property of the web service that can operate in a distributed system under different platforms. The main concept of the method is to add two web services: Card-Reader-Service Requester and Card-Reader-Service Provider to the web server side and the local side, respectively. Through the coordination between the requester and provider, the web-based HIS can read data from the IC Card. Consequently, the method can resolve the inherent problem that the client side in the web-based system cannot directly access data from the devices connected to the client. Thus with the proposed method, the web-based HIS can also access the IC-card like the client-server system and solve the problems that the NHI does not provide the control program of the card reader for the web-based HIS. |
