Physician profiling has emerged as one type of report card in the US healthcare industry since 1990. The information provided by physician profiling consist of physician background information and performance information. The majority of physicians agreed that the use of physician profiling could help them to change the practice patterns of patient care. But only very few physicians agreed that physician profiling should be released to the public. In addition, barriers occurred in the process of initiation of physician profiling. For example, the high costs were one of the barriers. Physician profiling can help consumers select the most appropriate physician, educate physicians understand their own practice patterns, provide physician information to hospitals or group practices as a basis of physician selection, and contain costs effectively for insurance companies. Besides, many US empirical studies demonstrated that physician profiling can decrease medical costs and increase the quality of medical care. Therefore, it is recommended that physician profiling be initiated in Taiwan healthcare market to lower medical costs and increase the quality of medical care. |
