Background and aim: There are advantages and disadvantages for BPH patients to receive surgical therapy or oral medication therapy. Currently, there is not any relevant literature research reports of the comparison between these two therapy methods within the country, so it is the motivation behind the research. The purpose of this study is using economic assessment method of cost analysis, and through therapy success rate ( 'International Prostate Symptom Score' IPSS after therapy is 30% less than before therapy) as a clinical outcome indicator and total cost as an economic outcome indicator to compare the cost difference between oral medicine and surgery in treating benign enlarged-prostate patient. Method: This study was a quasi-experimental design to explore the effects on cost analysis between the two different treatments. The reliability and validitytested instruments were used in this study as followings: the patient's questionnaire about urination problem (six months) and cost reports for hospital procedures. From November of 2001 to April of 2002, a total of 200 subjects who were diagnosed with mid-level clog enlarged prostate were drawn from outpatient clinic in a Taipei medical center. There were two groups in this study; 100 patients were received oral medicine treatment, and another 100 were treated by surgery. Two study group patients were fully informed of the research goal and consented. Two groups had 100 patient cases respectively with a total of 200 patient cases. Patients were to fill out one 'Questionnaire of patient expenses due to urination problem' each month and returned it to consultation's nursing station the next month during follow-up consultation visit with consecutive collection of six-month data after therapy with a response rate of 100%. The descriptive statistics, 2 test, independent sample t-test were used in this study. |
