Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is a highly contagious disease, with especially high infection rates for those long-term peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients due to their impaired cellular immunity. The main route of transmission for the SARS' coronavirus requires close contact with SARS patients. Therefore, to prevent transmission, the most important action a peritoneal dialysis center can take is to limit contact with SARS patients. In this article, we developed a SARS infection control protocol for both medical directors and nursing staffs to use with PD patients suspected of being infected with SARS. This protocol can serve as a reference for dialysis care workers who care for patients with similar conditions. |
