十六國時期由於政權紛立，亟需證明政權之合法性，更由於上自君主，下至百姓大都相信天命，因此，符瑞、災異思想依然盛行。當時之人從天文、地物、讖緯、器物、神異事蹟等方面去探索符瑞、災異，並利用符瑞、災異進行政治權力之爭奪，預測戰爭之成敗與擬訂征戰策略。當災異出現時，君主大都進行祈禱，希望轉禍為福。
