This case study reported the application of Ferrans Conceptual Model of Quality of Life in nursing a patient with recurrent colon cancer to improve the patient’s quality of life. This patient was diagnosed with recurrent colon cancer and subsequently hospitalized in August, 2011 to receive chemotherapy. The discomfort and stress resulted from the recurrence and the treatment negatively influenced the patient’s quality of life physically and psychologically. The nursing period lasted from August 31^(st) to November 2^(nd) in 2012, which was divided four 3-day admissions with two to three weeks interval in between each admission. The author collected and analyzed data through physical assessment, conversation and inspection of medical record. The major health problems were identified as altered nutrition (less than body requirements), fatigue and uncertainty. Through caring, listening, mental support, and individualized guidance on diet and health education, the patient’s quality of life significantly improved. This report could serve as a reference for nursing staff that, by implementing individualized care and education, could improve the quality of life for cancer patients. |
