This paper described the nursing experience of applying therapeutic play to a toddler with enterovirus infection. During the nursing period from February 10th to 15th, 2013, the researcher collected relevant data of the patient by means of observation, interview and direct caring experience. With the application of Gordon's 11 functional health patterns, the researcher assessed the data and identified three major health issues: acute pain, hyperthermia, and caregiver role strain. During the nursing process, a therapeutic play was designed in accordance to the patient's development, by using objects that the patient was familiar with and safe medical equipments. Through the play, the author successfully established a good rapport with the patient. Furthermore, the primary caregiver was provided with appropriate knowledge on the disease and its nursing techniques to address her concerns, thereby increasing the confidence and the ability of the primary caregiver, which led to the successful discharge of the patient. This nursing experience can serve as an reference when nursing toddler patient with similar disease. |
