This report describes a nursing experience of caring for an obstetric partner who accompanied his wife through an eventful labor due to a likely amniotic fluid embolism. The baby was born with critical condition, underwent resuscitation but died shortly afterwards. Applying Worden's Grief Counseling principle, the author assisted the client in accomplishing four tasks of mourning. The nursing care period was from January 5 to 26, 2010. The client's reactions to the loss were anger, insomnia, restlessness, unable to accept the loss, avoidance in talking about the son's death to other family members, and frequent sighing and crying. With an individualized care plan, the author provided support by accompanying the client as he went through the painful grief and healing process. Counseling was continued even after the client's wife was discharged from the hospital to make sure the client had emotionally relocated his deceased son, went back to work, moved on and set new goals for his life. The author hopes that this special experience can be shared with other nurses caring for grieving parents. Parental loss should be regarded with comprehensive care which values the grief counseling skills. |
