This article describes the nursing experience for a patient with H1N1 influenza who suffered from physical and psychological distress due to isolation. During the nursing period from August 20 to September 3, 2009, four major nursing problems were identified using Roy's Adaptation Model. These problems included inefficient breathing pattern caused by pneumonia, hyperthermia secondary to the acute stage of disease, anxiety from the media report and uncertainty of disease progression, and social isolation for infection control. The nursing interventions included adopting a treatment plan involving a multidisciplinary team; providing individualized care to relieve shortness of breath and discomfort due to fever; offering relevant information and nursing guidance to increase the patient's awareness and coping capacity for anxiety reduction; and supporting the patient in physiological, psychological, and spiritual aspects through caring, empathy, communication, and a desire of improving the patient's anxiety from isolation. The patient was referred to adequate resources for continual follow-ups after patient discharge. This experience serves as a reference for other nurses who take care of similar patients in the future. |
